This rare and intriguing piece of nature's artwork was donated to the museum by Daniel Eskenazi, a London dealer in Chinese art & artifacts, in honour of Sir Attenborough’s 90th birthday.
The Gogotte, a stunning sandstone concretion, is a sedimentary rock made up of quartz grains cemented together over 30 million years ago in northern France, when the area was covered by sand dunes, leaving a thick deposit of pure sand.
Its contours and creases were shaped by much later geological processes where silica-rich water gradually filtered through the sand, creating the Gogotte's unique, fluid lines.
You can find this particular 'Attenborough one' on permanent display in a Meyvaert Modular Freestanding showcase at the 'Lasting Impressions' Gallery of the museum.
