For centuries, the Waal River shaped life along its banks in Roman times, offering trade, protection, and even spiritual significance. Yet the Waal is more than a lifeline. It is a force of nature, shifting its course and burying objects over centuries, only to reveal them again when the time is right.
Now, Museum De Bastei in Nijmegen unveils 'Romeinse Waalschatten' (Roman Waal Treasures), an exhibition that brings together 101 remarkable archaeological finds, many on loan from the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (RMO) as part of their Onder Ons project. This is the first time so many artifacts from the Waal region are displayed together, shedding light on the intricate relationship between the Romans and this dynamic river.
From silver bowls and seal rings to a striking cavalry helmet with a face mask, these treasures reveal how Romans lived, fought, worshipped, and traveled along the Waal. Divided into five themes—living, food, transport, border security, and spirituality—the exhibition offers an immersive glimpse into the past. Not only can we discover the treasures that emerged from the Waal River, but also the stories behind them.
We are delighted to contribute to this exhibition with our Meyvaert Products, designed to showcase artifacts like these with clarity and care. These cases create the perfect environment for visitors to engage with the intricate craftsmanship of Roman relics while ensuring their long-term protection. By seamlessly balancing visibility and conservation, our solutions allow history to be explored without compromise.
