For nearly a thousand years, the Bayeux Tapestry has told the story of the Norman Conquest, from the Battle of Hastings to William the Conqueror's rise to power. From 10 September 2026, visitors to the British Museum will be able to walk its full length, almost 70 metres, displayed horizontally for the first time.
Meyvaert was entrusted with designing, producing and installing the custom showcase that makes this presentation possible. Inside, a controlled environment shields the fragile textile from humidity, dust and vibrations. Outside, the glass keeps all of this out of sight, so the embroidery stays the focus.
Preparing the showcase also meant preparing for the movement of an irreplaceable object. The installation was carefully rehearsed by a joint team of British and French specialists. Once the exhibition closes in July 2027, the modular showcase can be divided into smaller units and reused for future displays.
It's a privilege to have played a part in making this presentation possible, alongside the British Museum and its partners.
The Bayeux Tapestry will be on view at the British Museum from 10 September 2026 to 11 July 2027.
